Trezor.io/Start | Starting® Up® Your® Device®

Official, easy-to-follow setup guide for your Trezor hardware wallet — from unboxing to your first secure transaction.

Welcome

Congratulations on your new Trezor hardware wallet. This guide walks you through safe, practical steps to get your device up and running: verify packaging, initialize or restore the device, secure your recovery seed, and perform initial account setup. Follow each step carefully to protect your funds.

Tip: Read the whole guide before starting and ensure you use a trusted computer for setup.

What's in the box

Verify authenticity

  1. Examine the seal and packaging for tamper indicators. If the seal is broken or you suspect tampering, contact official support and do not use the device.
  2. Go to trezor.io/start and follow the links to download Trezor Suite or begin the web-based setup. Always use the official domain.

Initialize as new device

  1. Connect your Trezor using the supplied cable and open Trezor Suite or the official setup page.
  2. Choose Set up as new device and follow prompts to create a PIN. Use a PIN that's memorable to you but not trivial.
  3. The device will generate a recovery seed (12 or 24 words). Carefully write each word on the provided recovery card in order. Verify words when prompted.
  4. Confirm setup completion in Trezor Suite and create your first accounts.

Never store your recovery seed digitally (photos, cloud). Physical backups only.

Restore from an existing seed

  1. On the setup screen choose Recover wallet.
  2. Enter your recovery words using the device's input method. Ensure accuracy and the correct order.
  3. If you used a passphrase previously, enter the same passphrase to access the correct hidden wallet.

A passphrase is optional and creates a different wallet; losing it means permanent loss of access to funds in that derivation.

Set up accounts and receive funds

  1. In Trezor Suite, add accounts for supported coins (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.).
  2. To receive, select an account and click Receive. Always verify the receiving address on the Trezor device display matches the one shown in Suite before sharing it.
  3. Start with a small test transaction to confirm everything functions as expected.

Troubleshooting common issues

Device not detected

  1. Try a different USB cable and port. Avoid USB hubs and charge-only cables.
  2. Restart Trezor Suite and your computer. Ensure the device is unlocked and responsive.
  3. Reinstall Trezor Suite from the official site if issues persist.

Forgot PIN

If you enter the wrong PIN three times the device will wipe. Restore your wallet using your recovery seed. If you lost the seed, funds cannot be recovered.

FAQ

Q: Can someone recover my funds if they find my device?
A: Not without your PIN and recovery seed. The seed is the true master key — keep it secure.
Q: Should I buy a used Trezor?
A: Avoid used devices when possible. If you buy one, perform a factory reset and generate a new seed before using.
Q: How many words is the recovery seed?
A: Typically 12 or 24 words depending on model and chosen settings.
